Kamchatka

1995

In 1995 i visited Kamchatka for three months, after the place had opened up for foreign visitors. I had just finished my photography education and my goal was to visit Siberia and see how the native reindeer herders were living, before the new times might change everything. Through August  to October I saw how the beautiful landscape changed from green summery hills to snowy tundra. I was stationed in Palana in the north - western part of the Kamchatka peninsula. My stay did bring me to many exiting places and I met a lot of friendly people. The pictures shown on this site is a taste  of the places I were and the people  met. I do not speak Russian so there were a struggled to get hold of information. But with good will of the local people and a bit of humor we managed to communicate. Palana is the head center for the native Koryaks. The name Koryaks were given to them by others and mean those who lives with reindeers. But they are divided into two groups. The Nemelan who live along the coast and rivers, and Chauchen who live with the reindeers.
